BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Behavioral, psychosocial, environmental and psychological changes aimed at the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of physical health.

  • Weight Loss and Maintenance- The focus is on targeting, analyzing and then modifying your actual behaviors, as opposed to expecting you to fit into a “cookie-cutter” weight loss program. In conjunction with your physician or nutritionist, this approach incorporates realistic goal setting, healthy eating, cardiovascular exercise, and the creation and maintenance of healthy behaviors or “habits.”
  • Smoking Cessation- We begin by looking at your motivation to quit, “quit history” and level of physical and psychological addiction. Treatment includes education, skills training, social support, and relapse prevention. Nicotine replacement products are often a component of the treatment.
  • Chronic Pain- The experience, expectation of, and reaction to chronic pain, often create a vicious cycle that is very difficult to escape from. Treatment for chronic pain sufferers involves a behavioral analysis of their pain experience, an evaluation of their prescribed and un-prescribed treatment methods, and an examination of their cognitions related to pain. Activity scheduling and goal setting are often important components of treatment as well.
  • Improving Compliance- Sometimes, even with the best intentions, it can be challenging to follow physician’s orders- especially when it has to do with a chronic medical condition. By conducting a behavior analysis of the situation and identifying targets for intervention, compliance can often be significantly improved. Targets for change may lie within the individual, their social structure, or their environment.
  • Sleep Disorders- Sleep disorders lower quality of life and contribute to physical and mental health problems. The focus is on the evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders by addressing behavioral, psychological, and physiological factors that interfere with sleep. Eliminating habits, behaviors and environmental disruptions that stand in the way of quality rest are combined with a focus on examining, managing, and modifying sleep interfering thoughts and beliefs.
